Planting in a Pot

Friday I posted in our newsletter the annual garden edition, which seems popular because Container Gardening is taking off for the obvious convenience and efficiency of its universal approach. Stated differently, if you enjoy back-breaking work tilling, weeding and watering, you won't be interested; but, many assume…

Universal "Living"

Last Wednesday I heard the best term yet for describing the too technical and sleep inducing Universal Design. The National Association of Home Builders hosted a succinct, well rounded webinar, Universal Design is for Everyone, and used "universal living" to describe a convenient home accessible and safe for everyone.

I described the presentation and included a pair of links to resources, including the entire presentation,…

How does your house measure as a Lifetime Home?

Last year I spent six months compiling a comprehensive assessment home owners can use to compare all areas of their property, inside and outside including the garage and yard. I posted the Lifetime Home Survey (LTHS) in October and this week released the first revision. You can access both the mini- and full versions by clicking this link.

I reviewed 17 sources…

Bring assisted care to you as needed

AARP surveys show people want to remain in their homes and "improve, don't move" is gaining traction as the national media reports more frequently the benefits of a universally designed home for "aging-in-place". (A phrase I detest actually. I prefer active aging.)

Cost is the typical and overriding concern of owners considering modifying or retrofitting their current homes. Sure, people would ideally like to stay home, but can they afford to?

Well now the…

Lifetime Home Survey

The phrase "aging-in-place" is rejected often by those who rebut, "I refuse to sit around aging, I intend to be active", so now the AARP is promoting instead, "living-in-place" or active aging. Regardless of whether you tag as Universal "lifespan" Design, barrier-free, easy living or a host of other labels, the core benefit is…See More

Green Fireplace?

Marketers and consumers have gotten carried away "greening" everything from toilet bowl cleaner to breakfast cereal; however, I suppose the fixation on efficiency and sustainability is better than the alternative consumers have practiced for decades. All-in-all, while sometimes ridiculous, it's not a bad thing striving to conserve and save the planet. But I'll admit I was skeptical when I ran across an article about efficiency standards for fireplaces, inserts and stoves. Surprisingly, the…See More

Tub or Shower?

Chevy or Ford? Coke or Pepsi? iPhone or Droid (OK, that one is mostly for the Echo Boomers.) Do you prefer to take a bath or shower? Most don't give much thought, until beginning to age, when a person may be moving to, building or remodeling what they intend to be their "last home". It's no insignificant choice. What will you use more often? What consumes the most water, time, personal energy? What is safest (depending on your circumstances and stage of life)? And will you use both? The answers…See More

Stages instead of Stuff

Multiple surveys show home owners of all ages are getting over the infatuation with "bigger is best". And that's fine because the McMansions were getting ridiculous, particularly if you spend every nickel building or buying and don't have money to furnish or pay the utilities. But there's another aspect of home ownership that I feel is still being missed despite people insisting this is my "last" or dream home, and that's the livability of the home. Simply, how long can you stay there?…See More

AARP Bath Webinar

Last Friday I shared the best article I've read about Universal Design. Los Angeles Times reporter, Mary MacVean, focused on convenience and usability and not inability/disability in her column The Age of Ease describing what she saw at the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show in Chicago. (…See More

Ease for Everyone

I scour the Internet daily staying abreast of the latest trends in Universal Design. I'm happy to have discovered the article I'm sharing here. A major media outlet, the Los Angeles Times, has seen the light in describing UD first and foremost as easy, convenient and stylish, not simply "for the disabled", "handicap accessible" or "aging in place" (although it's all those things too). I pay attention to every UD related article I can find and this is THE first one that didn't focus on…See More
