Last Wednesday I heard the best term yet for describing the too technical and sleep inducing Universal Design. The National Association of Home Builders hosted a succinct, well rounded webinar, Universal Design is for Everyone, and used "universal living" to describe a convenient home accessible and safe for everyone.

Last year I spent six months compiling a comprehensive assessment home owners can use to compare all areas of their property, inside and outside including the garage and yard. AARP surveys show people want to remain in their homes and "improve, don't move" is gaining traction as the national media reports more frequently the benefits of a universally designed home for "aging-in-place". (A phrase I detest actually. I prefer active aging.)
Cost is the typical and overriding concern of owners considering modifying or retrofitting their current homes. Sure, people would ideally like to stay home, but can they afford to?
