Collaborating for vitality and choice in the second half of life

In recognition of the annual Martin Luther King Day of Service, JABA has announced “Soup for Seniors”, a canned food drive benefiting local, low-income older adults.

“Low-income seniors who are homebound or who have trouble getting around are particularly vulnerable during the winter months,’ explains Martha Williams, Manager of Volunteer Services at JABA. A bit of ice or snow becomes an impassable barrier for our at-risk elderly neighbors. Nutritious heat-and-serve type of canned goods can be literal lifesavers.

Especially needed are canned meat products such as tuna or stew, pasta sauces, no-sugar added fruits and lower salt soups and vegetables. “Of course, monetary donations are always welcome, as well.”

“Wal-Mart employees from the Distribution Center at Zions Crossroads will be participating this year in the food drive,” says Williams. “So many Wal-Mart employees live in the counties served by JABA’s food programs and this is a way they can give back to their communities.

Soup for Seniors runs from January 2 to January 16.
